IMPORTANT NOTICE: On June 10, 2011, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded a $9.2 million contract to create an audit protocol and then audit covered entities' and business associates' compliance with the privacy and security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). These audits are expected to continue through December 2012 in an effort to find medical entities that fail to comply with HIPAA regulations. Audits will expose non-compliant providers to the potential for heavy fines and reputation-damaging publicity. Don't get caught unprepared and unaware.
